Plan relative routes in a procedural world
Treat the Map as a picture of your save, not as a coordinate chart shared by every player. Sandustry generates the world procedurally, so a cave, Artifact room, ice pocket, or objective shown to the left in a video may appear elsewhere in your world.
Plan routes from landmarks that already exist in your save: the surface factory, a vertical transport shaft, a large fluid basin, or a distinctive indestructible room boundary. When a direct tunnel meets hard terrain, return to the Map and plan a route around it instead of spending energy against material your current tool cannot remove.
Use Activity Heat to diagnose a large factory
Unlock Activity Heat when the production line has spread far enough that you cannot watch every section on one screen. The view highlights areas where factory activity is occurring. In the supplied full route, a quiet area helped direct attention to a filter that was preventing Copper from continuing through the line.
Start at the last output that is still moving, then inspect the first quiet segment immediately downstream. Check material type, filter direction, free receiving space, power, heat, and fluid supply at that boundary. Activity Heat tells you where to inspect; it does not identify the broken machine for you.

Reopen the Map after a major detour, especially when an indestructible wall forces you around a room. The arrow gives a direction, not a guaranteed clear tunnel. Keep enough energy to dig an approach and return, and leave the factory in a stable or safely stopped state before following a distant target.
Use the Map during Artifact and puzzle searches
Environmental arrows and unusual enclosed spaces can reveal puzzle areas while you explore. Use the Map to understand the unexplored space around a room and to find an accessible side, but solve the room from its local tool, material, button, and Foundation hints.
The basic Artifact Locator later provides a general direction when filled with Void Juice, while the Triangulation Lens upgrade enables exact guidance. Compare the indication with accessible space on your Map and approach indestructible terrain from another side.
Know what the current evidence does not confirm
Do not rely on universal Artifact coordinates, puzzle numbers, or an unconfirmed default Map key. Current references also do not verify a complete marker creation and deletion workflow, so this guide does not promise custom pins.
A useful Map check ends with a concrete decision: the next shaft to dig, the first quiet machine to inspect, or the direction of an active objective. If the view does not change that decision, return to the local factory or room and read its visible signals.
